Post-Baccalaureate
Non-Degree Admission / Post-Baccalureate
What is a post-baccalaureate?
Students who have earned an undergraduate baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (in the U.S.) or from a nationally recognized university (outside the U.S.) may apply for post-baccalaureate (non-degree) study. See the graduate school's post-bacc page
Why would you choose a post-baccalaureate?
A post-baccalaureate can take graduate courses without being admitted into the program. Transcripts, Recommendations, and Test Scores are not required to apply for a post-bacc. If a post-bacc student is later admitted into the Master's or PhD Bioinformatics programs, they can transfer up to 6 hours of post-bacc graduate level courses.
A post-baccalaureate student is someone who can answer yes to at least 1 of the following questions.
- You missed the deadline for either the Bioinformatics Master's or PhD programs.
- You are unsure if you want a degree in Bioinformatics, but would like to take a course to learn more about Bioinformatics.
- You did not submit your application to the Master's or PhD programs for various reasons (did not take the GRE, need more time to take GRE, did not request transcripts in time, your recommenders did not submit their recommendation on time, etc).
- You need more fundamental courses (cell biology, genetics, programming, or data structures) before joining the Master's or PhD programs.
How do I apply?
- Applications are only submitted online. Go to http://graduateschool.uncc.edu/admissions/apply-now.html
- Click the 'Apply Now' Button
- Click the 'Create Account' Button
- Create your profile
- Once you are logged in, you can click 'Application for Admission'
- On the left side, there are several tabs. You will need to key in as much information for all the tabs.
- For 'Program Information' tab, College or School: select Undesignated and For Degree: select Undesignated, Desired Major: select Post-baccalaureate
- If you are a North Carolina resident, you will want to key in all the information for the 'North Carolina Residency' tab. The graduate school will review your answers and determine whether or not you are considered in state. So please take time and answer this section carefully and completely.
- A statement of purpose for a post-baccalaureate can be 1-2 sentences. Just state that you are applying as a post-bacc and want to take courses in the Bioinformatics Department.
- Post-baccs are not required to have recommendations. Key in N/A in each of the recommender required boxes
- Click 'Check your Application' to see if you have completed all items.
- To submit your application, click the 'Submit' button that is at the top right of the page. Confirm that the application was submitted by logging out and then back into the system to ensure the submission.
