First Bioinformatics and Genomics Retreat a Success
Outside the glass encased hallway, it was cold and rainy in Charlotte, but inside the energy levels were high and enthusiasm hot as more than 200 scientists from industry and academia met at UNC-Charlotte's Center for Bioinformatics and Genomic's first Bioinformatics and Genomics retreat this afternoon.

The event featured more than 25 posters, scientific panels and scientific 'speed dating'. Dr. Cynthia Gibas, a recipient of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center's faculty recruitment grant said, "Scientific speed dating allows individuals that are interested in collaboration the opportunity to find out more about one another's strengths."

Ann Loraine, based at UNC-Charlotte's Kannapolis campus and an expert in plant genomics, added "the open forum and common purpose around bioinformatics and genomics promotes collaboration and awareness around our areas of expertise." Foci of the retreat included, a Genome Wide Assay Group, Microarray Core Lab Group, Systems Biology Group, Plant Genomics, Metagenomics, Structural Bioinformatics Group, Computational Mass Spectrometry, and various research groups.
