Internships

All Professional Science Master's students are required to complete an internship. Prior to the internship, the student must have the internship approved by the PSM committee. Please submit the Internship Approval Form to the Graduate Coordinator.

Once the internship is complete, please submit the Post-Internship Summary. Post internship presentations will occur in early/mid Fall semester. All PSM students are invited to attend and supervisors are encouraged to attend.

The required time to be spent on the internship project is a minimum of 20 hours/week for the equivalent of one summer session, although more is encouraged.

Conditions of enrollment: Admission to graduate standing in Bioinformatics and approval of advisor.

Course description: Project chosen and completed under the guidance of an industry or academic
partner, which results in an acceptable technical report.

Objectives of the course: To gain firsthand bioinformatics experience in a “real world” environment.
Instructional methods: Internships will be performed “off site” in an industrial, academic or
equivalent lab setting. Students are expected to actively participate in an appropriate bioinformatics
project as defined by the internship sponsor. A technical report and presentation at the end of the project should summarize the details of the project as allowed by intellectual property considerations.
Grading: Students will be evaluated in a pass/fail manner. The student’s advisor, in consultation with
the internship sponsor, will determine pass/fail status.

Attendance: To be defined by the internship sponsor.

Curricula materials: None.

Academic integrity: All students are required to read and abide by the Code of Student Academic
Integrity. Violations of the Code of Student Academic Integrity, including plagiarism, will result in
disciplinary action as provided in the Code. Definitions and examples of plagiarism are set forth in the
Code. The Code is available from the Dean of Students Office or online (1). A set of links to various
resources on plagiarism and how to avoid it is available at the UNC Charlotte Library website (2).
